FIRST TIME FILM FESTIVAL New York, New York - USA April 3 to 7, 2014

In the Spotlight today is the 2nd Annual First Time Fest (FTF), a unique, five-day celebration that's geared towards celebrating, promoting, and invigorating first-time filmmakers. The grand-prize winner at this thrilling festival will receive theatrical distribution and international sales of his or her project, and all twelve festival finalists will engage in a year-long mentorship program under the guidance of luminaries in the independent film marketplace.

Last year, FTF proudly presented its inaugural John Huston Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinema to Oscar-nominated filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream). The award was presented by Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese. Additional highlights from 2013 included an invigorating and intimate conversation with Harry Belafonte, as well as panels on industry representation, diversity in cinema, and transmedia storytelling.

Feature-length endeavors in fiction, non-fiction, or animation will be on full display at FTF, and the festival's awards will be presented in a range of categories including Outstanding Direction, Outstanding Screenplay, Outstanding Editing, Outstanding Cinematography, and more. Last year's festival featured compelling tales from Argentina, Australia, Chile, Belarus, and Israel.

FTF celebrates new and exciting work by first time directors, screenwriters, producers, editors, composers, and cinematographers.

MORE ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Finalists of FTF will receive complimentary transportation, all-access passes to films and panels, numerous opportunities to network with high-profile judges, and will compete for theatrical distribution that will take their labors of love all around the globe. FTF's unique judging process engages both a panel of industry professionals and feedback from New York City's engaging and diverse audience of film fans.

LA INDIE FILM FESTIVAL Los Angeles, California - USA March 6 to 16, 2014

In the Spotlight today is the 4th Annual LA Indie Film Festival, a treasure trove of some of the best independent voices in cinema today. LA Indie trains its focus on fantastic, creative stories that span a gamut of emotional responses. All screenings unfold at LA's Let Live Theater, which regularly plays host to some of the most innovative cinematic, theatrical, and musical performances in the city.

LA Indie warmly welcomes feature films, shorts, webseries, animated works, music videos, and TV pilots into its pool of consideration. Last year's festival honored a wide spectrum of exciting stories, from the inspiring true story of a high school running coach who led his team to a championship victory while battling Lou Gehrig's disease (Running for Jim) to an animated short chronicling the world's greatest hairdresser (Estefan).

The dual emphasis of LA Indie is to discover and promote great talents while also showcasing the works of well-known professionals and Hollywood stars. In previous years, the festival has boasted a "Casting Your Film" panel, an interracial 1890s Western, a retrospective of big-screen sex symbol Bettie Page, a feature-length reinterpretation of Macbeth, and a host of inspiring stories from around the globe.

In the Spotlight today is the 15th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival (NBFF), well-established and highly anticipated community celebration of all that great film can offer. In the Spotlight today is the 6th Annual LA Comedy Shorts (and LA Comedy Scripts) (LACS), an impressive epicenter for all things funny, conveniently situated right in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles. Honoring a hilarious blend of comedic short films and comedic scripts of any length, LACS routinely draws some of the biggest names in the funny business -- as well as high-powered agents, managers, and producers on the hunt for "the next big thing."

Now more than ever, entertainment companies need content creators who can bring the goods, and LACS makes great comedy easy to find and celebrate. Recently named among MovieMaker's "Top 5 Comedy Film Festivals for 2013," and listed among The Brooks Institute's "Top 10 Festivals in the United States," LACS draws sponsorship and support from Funny or Die, Cartoon Network, Comedy Central's Atom TV, and other impressive channels that can connect talented writers, filmmakers, and comics with the audiences they deserve.

In the Spotlight today is the 21st Annual Chicago Underground Film Festival (CUFF), the longest-running "underground" film festival in the world. Set amidst the cultural diversity and dynamic verve of one of America's most exciting cities, CUFF embodies the spirit of ingenuity and independence that characterizes many of the filmmakers it honors. Shining a bright spotlight on avant-garde and cult cinema, CUFF draws enthusiastic film fans from all over the world.

CUFF welcomes a mix of films and videos of all lengths and genres, but the festival's dominant focus is on works that chart new, experimental ground in form or content. Selected feature filmmakers receive travel stipends to attend the festival, as well as all-access passes to screenings, parties, and other events. Every day at CUFF is filled with unforgettable screenings, and every night is packed with invigorating parties and concerts. Previous CUFF events have featured performances from indie bands including The Ponys, Tommy Sunshine, and more.

The Chicago Sun-Times has lauded CUFF as "the city's most eclectic [and] best curated fest," and it's not hard to see why. Past programming highlights at the festival have included world and regional premieres of films like Two Years at Sea, Pig Death Machine, The Color Wheel, and Penelope Spheeris' The Decline of Western Civilization, Part III.

ENVIRONMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL AT YALENew Haven, Connecticut - USA March 31 to April 6, 2014

In the Spotlight today is the 6th Annual Environmental Film Festival at Yale (EFFY), a student-run celebration of creative works that seek to help improve and protect the health of our planet. With a focus on nurturing spirited discourse around a wide range of environmental topics, EFFY brings together leaders in climate change, conservation, wildlife preservation, and filmmaking to investigate the ways in which the arts and media can generate positive social change.

Founded by students at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, EFFY has since grown to become an impressive force in the Hollywood community and has been praised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as one of the "20 Great Resources for Green Filmmakers." Every screening at EFFY is paired with a Q&A featuring some of the most respected voices in environmental fields, and all screenings and special events at the festival are open to the public, free of charge.

Past EFFY celebrations and discussions have included presentations by Dan Rather, Van Jones, James Gustave Speth, Colin Beavan, and more. The festival has also played host to Oscar darlings Waste Land, The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom, and The Cove. Last year's EFFY welcomed the American premiere of GMO OMG, a film investigating the perils caused by lack of seed diversity in an increasingly corporate climate.

JULIEN DUBUQUE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL Dubuque, Iowa - USA April 24 to 27, 2014

In the Spotlight today is the 3rd Annual Julien Dubuque International Film Festival (JDIFF), a four-day celebration of independent film that's awash in special events, networking opportunities, and media access. Recently named one of MovieMaker Magazine's "Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World", JDIFF draws upon the rich artistic history of the American Midwest and unfolds in the famed Hotel Julien, the very location where Al Capone sought refuge from federal prosecution.

JDIFF presents its winners with cash prizes in a wide range of categories including Best Documentary ($8,000 USD), Best Actor ($2,000), Best Actress ($2,000), Best Use of Music in a Film ($3,000), and a Grand Jury Prize of $10,000. JDIFF's jury is comprised of music supervisors, cinematographers, film critics, and other working professionals who know great filmmaking. Official Selections at the festival will enjoy not only exceptional public exposure, but also partial reimbursement of their respective submission fees.

If they are nominees in any of the festival's six categories, filmmakers behind JDIFF's Official Selections will receive complimentary airfare, accommodations, and meals throughout their visit to Dubuque. Last year, the festival honored Gary Busey and held a "Cause We Can" event for the Gary Busey Foundation while raising awareness of, and money for the treatment of, Kawasaki Disease.
