In the Spotlight today is the 24th Annual New Orleans Film Festival (NOFF), bursting with all of the sights, sounds, and flavors of one of the most beloved cities in the United States. Recognized by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and named by MovieMaker Magazine as one of 25 festivals worth the entry fee in both 2012 and 2013, last year's NOFF drew more than 17,000 attendees (including more than 170 participating filmmakers) and screened more than 200 films. This year's NOFF aims to be even bigger and better.
It's no secret that New Orleans knows how to have a good time and excels at forging exciting connections. The festival's participating filmmakers will receive at least two nights of complimentary lodging and all-access passes to exciting films, parties, and more. Complimentary transportation will also be provided during the festival's opening weekend. As New Orleans continues to expand its resume in the world of film (recent hits Django Unchained, Beasts of the Southern Wild, and Looper all made great use of the Crescent City), expect to cross paths with Hollywood players in the midst of their latest projects.
NOFF offers juried awards in seven distinct categories, as well as audience awards bestowed by avid movie lovers. Last year, more than $70,000 USD in prizes was distributed, including camera packages, film stock, cash prizes, and filmmaking software. But the festival's greatest prize of all is the camaraderie it engenders between talented filmmakers and the New Orleans public at large. "Being embraced by the community where you made your film is the greatest gift a filmmaker can receive," said Academy Award-winning filmmaker Jonathan Demme, who screened I'm Carolyn Parker at the 2011 NOFF. "I have the New Orleans Film Festival to thank for this. I hope to show my next four documentaries here in the future."
