Top Story NAB chief wants to work with Wheeler on national broadcast plan
NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith, despite the enactment of restrictions on joint-sales agreements and joint retransmission-consent negotiations, is still hopeful of forging a positive working relationship with Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler. "What our government needs is not just a national broadband plan, it needs a national broadcast plan as well," Smith said. "This chairman has seemed open to that, so I hope to develop that in the future. The beginning has not seemed too promising, but the hope will never die." The NAB Show anticipates attendance of 93,000 people from 156 nations for the six-day convention, which kicks off on Saturday in Las Vegas with affiliated events for engineers and managers and a technology summit. The NextRadio application for Sprint mobile phones has completed its "soft launch" and is now ramping up to expand with "warp speed," according to Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan.
