MIFF's estimable program includes individual competitions for short films, documentaries, and narrative works, as well as retrospective screenings and screenings of great Russian films. As decided by a jury, the festival's coveted statuettes of St. George will be awarded to the festival's best film, best director, best actor, and best actress. Additional honors will be decided upon by a diverse and enthusiastic audience. A highlight of the festival for several years, the festival's special Stanislavksy prize has been awarded to some of acting's finest practitioners, including Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep, Emmanuelle Beárt, and Dame Helen Mirren.
Several films screened in competition at MIFF have gone on to become memorable cultural touchstones, including Searching for Sugarman, The Horde, and Magnificent Presence. MIFF takes great pride in ensuring every screening is a major event. Every film in the main competition may be represented by two delegates (director and actor/actress), each of whom will have the cost of travel and hotel accommodations covered by the festival.

In addition to its exciting competitive categories, MIFF offers the "Free Thought" category to memorable documentaries that have recently been released worldwide but which are not considered for competition. At MIFF, the objective is to allow as many creative and innovative voices to be heard as possible -- at a volume that can reach the whole world.
